Il past simple inglese in genere si forma aggiungendo ed, tuttavia esistono molti verbi irregolari.
Il past simple si usa per azioni finite: esempi

    il past continuous, passato progressivo

    Il past continuous inglese si usa per riferirsi a qualcosa nel passato che era iniziato,Ma non era ancora finito -stavo facendo qualcosa in un certo momento, l'azione non era finita: esempi

    differenza tra past continuous e past simple

    ecco le principali differenze tra il past continuous e il simple past :

    1) se vogliamo esprimere che le azioni nel passato sono successe una dopo l'altra dobbiamo usare il past simple : he come home , turned on the tv then watched his favorite show lui arrivo' a casa , accese la tv poi guardo' il suo spettacolo preferito mentre se vogliamo dire che due azioni nel passato sono successe insieme dobbiamo usare il past progressive :

    Luca was reading a book while his sister was having a shower
    Luca stava leggendo un libro mentre sua sorella stava facendo una doccia

    2)se vogliamo esprimere che una nuova azione e' successa nel mezzo di un'altra azione , dobbiamo usare sia il past continuous che il past simple nella stessa frase. il past continuous si usa per l'azione gia' in corso mentre il past simple si usa per la nuova azione:

    My phone rang when I was cooking the meal
    il mio telefono squillo' quando stavo cucinando il pasto

    3)se vogliamo semplicemente menzionare che una azione e' successa nel passato si usa il passato semplice :
    Sarah played basketball yesterday

    mentre se vogliamo enfatizzare che una azione e' successa in un momento preciso del passato usiamo il passato progressivo :
    Yesterday at five o clock ,
    Sarah was playng basketball

    i verbi che seguono sono usati di solito solo al passato semplice e poiche' non possono prendere la forma progressiva :

    i verbi di stato be , fit , cost ,suit ,mean

    i verbi che indicano possesso : have ,belong

    i verbi che esprimono i sensi : see , feel , hear , touch , taste

    i verbi usati per esprimere sentimenti : love , like , hope , hate , prefer , wish ,want

    i verbi che indicano attivita' cerebrale come understand , think ,believe , know

    con i verbi come ask , reply , say , answer
